What is the Museum?
The Railway Museum of Catalonia that is located in Vilanova y la
Geltrú is a valuable heritage facility at the service of people,
dedicated to the custody and dissemination of railway culture.
Since practically its constitution in 1990, it is managed by the
cultural organism of the public sector, the Fundación de los
Ferrocarriles Españoles, created for the recovery, custody,
dissemination and transmission of the historical heritage of the
railway. Currently in its Board of Trustees are represented the
main companies of the railway sector of the State. At the same
time, it is also part of the Territorial System of the Museu
Nacional de Ciència I Tecnologia de Catalunya and the network of
Museums of Vilanova.
The original facilities of the steam locomotive depot of the
city of Vilanova and the spectacular collection of historical
vehicles that it guards provide a unique heritage setting that
facilitates knowledge, enjoyment and promotes rail connectivity.
Convert this complex into an accessible, safe, welcoming,
innovative, healthy and interactive museum of the XXI century is
a challenge. At present, the Museum is immersed in the process
of transformation and projection towards the most important
future in its history. It has broad institutional support, as
well as the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, professional
associations and associations from different sectors and a
network of people committed to the consolidation project as a
reference centre.
